ABSTRACT STORY

Apart from being an awesome percussion instrument, the Damru has various connotations in Hinduism and Buddhism. The most prominent one is its connection to Shiva as a symbol of creation.

Shiva, is not a person, but is believed to be the space which contains and includes everything in existence and the intelligence that permeates every form.

Shiva is therefore believed to be the progenitor of sound, music, language and vibration, and the Damru in Shiva's hand represents the union of two triangles symbolizing the feminine/prakriti/yoni/yin and masculine/purusha/lingam/yang which brings forth creation, movement and sound. When the two are separated, everything lapses.
