Dhamma-Thamma

Before becoming the national emblem of India, the Ashok Stambh was erected by Emperor Ashok at various places to symbolize dharma.

The four lions standing back to back are standing over the wheel, which is surrounded by an elephant, a horse, a bull and a lion. These four animals represent four Tithankaras (one who establishes a path to liberation).
